Artworks getting lively through animation project

Rockhampton Art Gallery’s collection is coming to life through a new joint project with students from CQUniversity’s Bachelor of Digital Media course.

The Inanimate Animation Project will see elements of a number of the gallery’s 2D artworks digitally animated.

The animations will provide a more immersive experience for the public, who’ll be able to interact with the works on tablets, or see the animations screened next to the original artwork.

The animations will also be available on the Gallery’s website, meaning our nationally significant collection can be enjoyed far beyond the gallery walls.

The project’s been underway since April, and is working well with social distancing guidelines. Students work individually on their test objects online, sharpening their skills and perfecting their animations for delivery in October.

It’s the second collaboration with CQUniversity’s Bachelor of Digital Media course, after last year’s project saw the students creating 3D renderings of ceramic works in the gallery’s collection.
