Competitions, auditions, and opportunities for artists of all kinds...

High-school aged musicians can now enter the Queensland Music Festival's ScoreIT! competition.  They give you a short animated film, and you provide the score, with categories split up by year level and a special super-muso Plus category which has extra challenges like working with specific instruments and submitting a written score.  It's free to enter, and entries close May 18.  More info here.

Opera Queensland is looking for Rocky-based singers to audition for its touring production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Ruddigore, or The Witch’s Curse!  They'll be in town on Monday Feb 12 and Tuesday Feb 13, looking for 10 men and 10 women to sing and dance in the community chorus for the production when it comes to Rockhampton in August as part of a statewide tour.  Audition spots are likely to fill up quickly for this one, so suss it out and sign up here.  The creative team is warning anyone wanting to try out that it's going to be a high-intensity performance, and physically demanding.

Act for Kids is calling for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual artists to create an artwork to reflect their vision, as part of their Reconciliation Action Plan.   There are three prizes of $2,500 each on offer for works that reflect the organisation's vision: "we want all kids to have a safe and happy childhood, free from abuse and neglect".  To enter, send a photo of your completed artwork to deadlyart (at) actforkids.com.au by February 28, along with an entry form you can download here.

Still with Indigenous art, the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards are open until Friday, March 16.  Heading into its 35th year, NATSIAA is one of the premier national events on the Australian Indigenous art calendar.  Suss it out here.

Ambit Magazine is open to poetry submissions until March 1, and fiction from March 1 to April 1.  You can send up to five poems for the current call, and for the next either one piece of fiction up to 5,000 words, or one to three pieces up to 1,000 words each.  It's free to submit, but check the mag out first to get a feel for what they're after.  More info here.

The Hutchins Australian Contemporary Art Prize has a first prize kitty of $20,000, and is open for entry until March 2.  Check it out here.

Tropical Bloom Festival, a celebration of music, art, culture and community coming up in late July, is now open to applications for creative work covering music, live performance, visual art, installations, workshops and lectures, as well as volunteers and market stalls.  Apply here.
